Project Description

This service-learning project will be conducted by The University of Akron coordinators of Service-Learning and will work with the local Enterprise branch and local United Ways. The project will work with these organizations in two focal points: (1) Helping children and youth succeed: This will involve helping children in selected low-income neighborhoods to enter schools ready to learn; help children who are transitioning out of the child welfare system by means of improving education, housing, social relationships, and employment; and will institute Early Childhood Development initiatives that integrate health, nutrition, intellectual stimulation, provide opportunities for exploration and active learning, and provide social and emotional nurturing a child needs to grow and thrive. (2) Strengthening and supporting families: As a very broad category, this focal point will address such components as parenting, substance abuse, case management, health and financial education , and counseling. Aside from these two focal points, United Ways also improve access to healthcare, and promote independence and economic self-sufficiency. The service learning project will be able to address the purposes and needs of United Ways. Through involvement in this project, participant students may develop into local leaders in family support systems.
